Recognizing that God created every student with unique gifts and talents, Bracken Christian School offers the S.H.I.E.L.D. program to support students with learning differences or those who need extra academic help.
S.H.I.E.L.D., which stands for Support, Help, Inspire, and Encourage Learning Development, offers a variety of services, including subject area tutoring, dyslexia therapy, and accommodations.
Our goal is to help every student become an independent, confident learner who can overcome challenges, achieve academic success, and grow in their faith.
Dyslexia therapy is a specialized intervention for students with dyslexia and related reading difficulties. At Bracken, therapy is provided by a Certified Academic Language Therapist (CALT), using evidence-based methods that are systematic, explicit, structured, and cumulative. Dyslexia therapy focuses on building a strong foundation in phonemic awareness, phonics, spelling, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension.
The goal of therapy is not only to improve reading and spelling skills, but also to provide students with the tools and strategies they need for long-term academic success.
Dyslexia therapy is provided in a one-on-one or small group setting (2-5 students), to best fit your child’s learning needs. Sessions are held 1 to 4 times per week.
We provide tutoring and subject area support for students who need additional help beyond the classroom. These sessions are designed to reinforce key skills, strengthen areas of difficulty, and provide targeted practice in subjects where a student may be struggling. Support may include homework help, test preparation, and strengthening skills in reading, writing, math, organization, and study strategies.
The purpose of tutoring is to bridge learning gaps, build confidence, and give students the tools they need to succeed academically and become more independent learners.
Sessions are offered one-on-one, 1-4 times per week.
Rise Up is a general elective offered for students in grades 6–12. This course is designed to provide students with practical academic and life skills that support success both in and out of the classroom. Lessons will focus on strategies such as note-taking, time management, organization, reading comprehension, writing, executive functioning skills, test preparation, and effective study habits.
After each lesson, students will have structured study time to apply what they’ve learned right away. During this time, they also have access to on-the-spot tutoring, making it an excellent opportunity to work through challenging assignments, prepare for upcoming assessments, or complete tests and quizzes with accommodations.
Rise Up is offered 5 days a week. Support is provided in a group of up to 10 students.
We believe every student deserves the tools and support to succeed. For students with documented needs, teachers provide daily accommodations to help them access learning and thrive. These supports do not modify the curriculum—they simply remove barriers so students can focus on learning.
Common accommodations include:
Our goal is to make learning accessible and engaging for every student, helping them reach their full potential.
General Accommodations are provided by classroom teachers (daily).
For eligible students, our extended accommodations are designed to provide a supportive environment that helps them perform their best.
These accommodations, managed by SHIELD staff, include options for testing in a small group, receiving additional time, and access to a quiet area, free from distractions.
These sessions are available 1-4 times per week to ensure consistent support.

Our Admissions Team will inform you if we can adequately serve your student. Students struggling in school who lack a formal diagnosis may also enroll in SHIELD, as space permits.
