Another year, another 40-book challenge...
from Mrs. Graves.
Each of the past few years I have been challenging 6th and 7th grade students to a 40-book reading challenge. Because I believe that the more students read the better readers they become, I dedicate time in class for reading, recommend books, and validate the students' choices when I can. The challenge originated with inspiration from my daughter, also a 6th grade English teacher. She introduced me to an approach from The Book Whisperer which actually requires students to read 40 books in the school year. While I couldn't bring myself to make that requirement for all students, I have required them to read 10 to 12 books, and I challenged them to read 40. Many students have shown interest and have read a lot of books, but this year there were two students who stepped up to the challenge.
These students will receive an Amazon gift card in addition to the true reward of a job well-done and the enjoyment of the task (reading) itself. The time spent reading and the freedom to choose their own books will hopefully lead other students to discover the love of books and reading.
Congratulations to Joshua Schroeder and Grant Peters!
"Reading changes your life. Reading unlocks worlds unknown or forgotten, taking travelers around the world and through time. Reading helps you escape the confines of school and pursue your own education."
- Donalyn Miller, The Book Whisperer: Awakening the Inner Reader in Every Child
Note to all 2016-17 6th and 7th graders:
Participate in the summer reading program, and you can include these in your 40 book chart when the new school year starts.
