Bracken Christian School has placed 5th out of 81 1A TAPPS schools across Texas for the Henderson Cup Award. The Henderson Cup Award recognizes schools for their overall performance in Art, Academics, Vocal, Instrumental Music and Sports.
An ounce of prevention, may be worth a pound of cure; but a simple hands-on lesson is worth invaluable empowerment and action during an emergency.
Bracken Christian School doesn’t take emergency preparedness lightly. For the past four years, high school students have had the opportunity to become certified as a National Registry Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) which includes certification in CPR, oxygen administration and emergency medical response.
The young women and men who choose to embark on this year long elective course participate not only in daily classroom lessons and skills training but also participate annually in presenting lifesaving skills session all students (pre-kindergarten through twelfth grade). This year was no different, on March 27th the annual, “What to do until EMS arrives”, was a huge success! The students alongside faculty mentors lead hands-on stations of hands-only CPR, recognizing and treating choking and care for life threatening bleeding.
One month later, April 28th the unthinkable happened during class a student began choking on a piece of candy. Without hesitation, Ty Wolf, a seventh grader jumped into action. From behind, he wrapped his arms around the student who clearly could not breathe and gave a couple of quick squeezes, and the candy popped out. The student who was choking resumed breathing without complication.
May 10th, Bracken Christian School, Bulverde-Spring Branch Fire & EMS and the Centre for Emergency Health Sciences honored Ty Wolf for his extraordinary personal action. The long-standing partnership forged between Bracken and our emergency service community is unprecedented, connecting experience with the future. Empowering our students with the knowledge and skills to take action during an emergency is just a small facet of Kingdom Education at Bracken Christian School.
