I began attending Bracken in K-4 in 1982 when it was at Bulverde Baptist Church. We moved to the Bracken campus just before I started 2nd grade. We had no playground so we played freeze tag on what is now the elementary parking lot and pick up lanes. I have the scars from the asphalt to prove it!
The next year we enjoyed roller skating parties on the slab of what was to become the gym. Those were exciting times in Bracken's history, for sure. And I have memories of Mrs. Guercio's class room being our chapel room. The wall between her classroom and the one next door went up and down to expand two classrooms into one giant one at least 2 or 3 times over the years. Our library is now the after school care room and one of our favorite things to do (those of us whose parents worked at BCS) was to play under the main stairwell and hang on the underside of the stairs! The clinic was half the size that it is now, and our "nurse" was the receptionist, thereby enabling me to stay in the dark quiet clinic longer than I really should have. There was no upper campus, grades K4 – 12 were in one building.
Everybody's parent did something to aid in the day to day functions of the school. We saw very nerve racking days in the monetary aspect of Bracken, and our administration and board members lived by faith, day to day, praying for God's grace to be open another day. I didn't know it at the time, but looking back now, it astonishes me how God blessed the school and sustained us while keeping us humble. That is how I see Bracken's role in Christian education. Our area doesn't lack Christian education, but as we struggle monetarily and work to fix our mistakes, we are teaching humility to a generation that has just about everything - God provides for His faithful ones and to remember never to depend on ourselves, but on Him.
I graduated in '96 after 5 years of cheerleading, which I adored. I entered Houston Baptist University as a music major (thanks to my Bible/chapel teacher and numerous years on the praise team). I met my husband there and married in '98. I delivered my sweet sons Aaron in 2000, who is in 7th grade at BCS, Adam in 2002, in 5th grade, and my long awaited and vibrant daughter in 2008 who started K-4 this year. And next year, she will have Mrs. Julie Day, who was also my kindergarten teacher!
I love Bracken for my memories both as a student for 12 years, the memories of my children and the ones to come. Bracken has taught me lessons literally my whole life. Persevere. God will provide.
