BCS Elementary Choir
The BCS Elementary Choir program is an opportunity for elementary students to get plugged into worship through singing, dance, and drama. The choir is available to students in the 2nd through 5th grades. Our program is divided into 2 semesters, Fall and Spring. Choir meets weekly on Wednesday afternoons from 3:00-4:00 PM. During the rehearsal time students enjoy a snack, learn vocal warm-up songs, and prepare programs for various events throughout the year.
Each fall the students perform several special chapels such as our Veteran’s Day and Christmas Chapels. In the spring our big program is our Easter Chapel. The choir also helps lead worship at other times throughout the year at BCS, such as in our school wide SALT Partner chapels, National Day of Prayer Chapel, and also from time to time in the weekly elementary chapel. Choir members have the opportunity to go on 2 field trips a year. For the past several years, during our fall semester, our Elementary Choir has traveled outside of the Bracken walls and shared the Christmas story through song and scripture with the residents of the Henry House Assisted Living Center in Blanco, TX. After sharing the Christmas story, our students have enjoyed doing crafts with the residents. This is a highlight of our trip as students and residents visit and catch up with what their new friends have been doing since the previous year’s trip. They enjoy doing crafts with the same people year after year. In the spring the field trip is usually a time of fun, fellowship, and games as we celebrate the end of a great year together.
BCS MS Praise Team
The MS Praise Team is a group of students in the 6-8th grades. These students go through an audition and interview process. During the audition students prepare a song to sing or play on the instrument in which they are already mostly proficient. This group is not designed to teach students how to sing or play a musical instrument. However, students do use their musical skills to prepare worship music for various events throughout the year. During the interview students are asked to share their personal testimonies of why they love God and why they want to use their gifts and talents to serve the Lord through music. Students selected to this group meet during their lunch time to rehearse.
The MS Praise Team leads worship at the MS camp and at various chapels throughout the year. They also have visited local nursing homes such as the Live Oak Medical Center in Blanco, TX to minister to the residents through music.
BCS HS Praise Team
Bracken Christian High School offers a Praise Team Elective Class. This class is a group of vocalists and instrumentalists with a desire to use their God-given talents to lead in worship. Students read from chord charts and learn to play, practice, and perform music together with other students. Praise Team members lead worship in Chapel once a week throughout the year. Praise Team members also lead worship or perform for various other campus events or special chapels as needed. The music style is usually modern praise and worship, although the music can also include singing hymns and older praise songs as well. In addition to music preparation, students participate in online or live workshops. The workshops cover a variety of topics addressed in the performance aspect of worship. This includes, but is not limited to, warm-up exercises, blending of voices and instruments, song mapping, stage presence, and microphone technique.
Moreover, Praise Team members discuss the fact that God created music and gave it to man as a gift. He gave man a voice and the ability to invent and play musical instruments. God created sound and the ability to make and hear music. He gives man the ability to write music and words. He also gives us the ability to feel and respond to music. God wants to be glorified through the appreciation of music and through our musical expressions, but ultimately the main scriptural purpose of music is for the praise and worship of God.
Students enrolled in this class have an opportunity to receive ½ Fine Arts credit per semester as well as an opportunity to letter in Fine Arts.
The High School Praise Team Elective class meets every day during 7th period. As part of this class students are also required to be at school early (usually between 7:00-7:15) on Wednesday mornings to help set up sound and power point equipment and prepare for chapel.
During the 2015-2016 school year the HS Praise Team has lead worship at the HS camp, weekly chapels, and school wide SALT partner chapels. They have also led worship at local nursing homes and local churches.
In December 2015 they were invited to perform for the Philanthropic Educational Organization Christmas Luncheon. This year’s group also attended the Calibrate Worship Conference in January 2016 at the Cross Mountain Church in Boerne, TX. Some of the presenters for this event were Ellie Holcomb, Montell Jordan, and Steven Curtis Chapman. The purpose of the conference was to encourage, educate, and inspire through the calibration of the calling to be a worship leader. The 2016-2017 year promises to be full of new opportunities for the team to lead worship on the BCS campus and out into the world.
BCS Bailadora Dance Team
2016-2017 Bailadoras Dance Team
Bracken Christian School is excited to announce our dance team, the Bracken Bailadoras. This team meets once a week, with Choreographers Joni and Katerina Kellar, at Joni's Dance Studio to work on new routines and technique. The team also meets after school several days a week to practice learned routines and work on skills such as stretching, strength and flexibility. Previous experience in dance, gymnastics, or music is helpful but not required. Tryouts are held in the spring of each year for the following year. The girls will attend camp to learn new routines and to allow for team bonding.
The team performs at football half-time games, basketball half-time games, and pep rally's to encourage our athletes and school spirit. The girls also have the opportunity to use dance as a form of worship by performing in selected chapel services. This past year the Bailadoras performed in the Easter chapel, and SALT chapel. The Bailadoras also serve our community in various ways. This past year they helped serve dinner to guests at the Bulverde Pregnancy Care Center grand opening fundraiser. The Bailadoras also participated in our Brackenfest fundraiser by face painting and helping with games for the little ones.
At the end of the year the Bailadoras and the Fine Arts Department teamed up and hosted a Spring Show featuring all routines performed throughout the year. This show served as a very beneficial fundraiser for our Fine Arts Department.
Our goal is to use dance as a form of worship to the Lord, express school spirit, and to grow and develop skills in the art of dance. This team is made up of beautiful young ladies that have a heart for the Lord and will grow in their relationships with each other and their desire for dance.
Let them praise His name with dance! (Psalms 30:11)
